Hail Caesar Campaign using Hannibal

Postby Tom » Tue Feb 23, 2016 7:03 pm

I’ve been looking at some Polybian organizations to get a grip on how these are represented in the “Hannibal” board game.

So what I get is that a “Consular” army typically have four legions (two Roman and two allied “ala”). These would number 4,200 men broken down as 300 Cavalry, 600 Triarii, 1200 Hastati, 1200 Princepes, and 1200 Velites.

I think in Hail Caesar terms we are talking:

10 units of Velites – 13pts ea for 130pts
10 units of Hastati – 23pts ea for 230pts
10 units of Princepes – 23pts ea for 230pts
5 units of Triarii – 28pts ea for 140pts
2 units of Medium Cavalry – 19pt ea for 38pts
That totals 768 pt for a full legion

In “Hannibal” armies are built out of Combat Units “CU” of roughly 3000 men. The biggest army you can have in the game is 10 CU’s, 30,000. When we did Hannibal before we used 1 CU = ½ a legion. This might make us want to consider using 1 CU in Hannibal = 400 points of “Hail Caesar.” If we did this would make the biggest armies we would see in the campaign at 4,000 points. With our 10mm units it seems like that take about four 4x6 boards a 24 long table! So I’m thinking that a CU from Hannibal might have to be scaled back to 150 “Hail Caesar” points.

Now the reason I’m looking very hard at this is because I’d like to consider “set” combat units of about 250pts each. So a Roman/Ala CU might look like:

3 units of Velites – 13pts ea for 39pts
3 units of Hastati – 23pts ea for 69pts
3 units of Princepes – 23pts ea for 69pts
2 units of Triarii – 28pts ea for 48pts (every 4th Triarii can be traded for a medium cav)
That totals 233pts could upgrade the Triarii and Princepes to add 12 more points to get it to 245pts total.

So in the campaign game, every Roman/Ala CU would give you the above. But when the Roman player is raising troops in Spain…they’d be Spanish CUs, in Gaul they’d be Gallic CUs, in Numidia they’d be Numidian CUs etc. Likewise the Carthaginians could recruit these and would have a standard CU set for Libyan and Elephant CUs.

The biggest size armies we would see would 2500pts. So would need up to 12' by 4' table.

We'd have:

Roman/Ala CUs
Carthaginian Libyan CUs
Carthaginian Elephant CUs
Gallic CUs
Spanish CUs
Macedonian CUs (brought in by a Carthaginian event Card)
Hoplite/Italian CU's (Syracuse)
Numidian CUs

So the composition of your armies would be determined by where you did your raising of troops.

So just kicking this idea around to see what you guys think,

But I has boxes and boxes of painted 15mm Ancients! This does look pretty cool though.

If you have enough for both sides, no reason some of the battles could not be played out using your collection.
